Introduction
Radioactive materials and radiation producing devices are sources of ionizing radiation and are considered hazardous materials and devices. In Iowa the procurement, possession, use and disposal of these items are highly regulated to protect public health and safety. The Iowa Department of Public Health (IDPH), by agreement with the Nuclear Regulatory Agency (NRC), oversees the use of ionizing radiation in Iowa.
The Radiation Safety Committee (RSC) is responsible for ensuring the safe use of radioactive materials and radiation producing devices. The Department of Environmental Health and Safety (EH&S) is responsible for managing the Radiation Safety Program with guidance from the RSC. The Radiation Safety Program is governed by the Iowa Administrative Code, ISU's Broad Scope Radioactive Materials License and the Radioactive Materials Safety Manual.
EH&S administers training and compliance operations of the Radiation Safety Program.
